Research on k-coverage based on static and mobile sensors in WSN

Abstract

This paper studied the k-coverage problem for wireless sensor networks. Firstly, this work defined an over-providing factor to indicate the coverage efficiency of the network, and on this basis, it analysed the k-coverage problems of static sensor networks and all-mobile sensor networks, and obtained the over-providing factors in these two cases and the maximum mobile distance of mobile sensors in all-mobile sensor networks. Furthermore, it proposed a hybrid network structure composed of static sensors and a small number of mobile sensors, and obtained k-coverage which was independent of network size in this network structure and a distributed mobile scheduling algorithm which scheduled the movement of mobile sensors, so as to achieve effective coverage. The simulation results show that the proposed hybrid network structure can not only achieve accurate k-coverage, but also has higher coverage than other k-coverage algorithms.
