Multi-scale safety helmet detection based on improved MTCNN

Abstract

Concerning the problem that the existing safety helmet detection methods have high miss detection rate for multiple overlapping targets and small targets, this paper proposed a multi-scale safety helmet detection method based on improved MTCNN. Firstly, the method deleted all the landmarks of MTCNN to simplify the network structure. Secondly, it replaced the maximum pooling layer with standard convolution layer to compose all convolution net, improving the detection accuracy. Thirdly, the algorithm introduced the lightweight network structure of MobileNet to reduce the computation amount. Finally, it appropriately adjusted the number of convolutional kernels and neurons of the fully connect layer to fit in multi-scale safety helmet detection. The experimental results show that compared with the original MTCNN, the precision and recall of the proposed method improve by 3.22% and 6.73% respectively, and the F1 score is increased by 8.13% for small-size helmet recognition. Besides, the average detection speed reaches 29.62 fps in a GPU-free environment, this method takes into account both the accuracy and speed of multi-scale helmet detection.
